By the time it is read to an American child the tale has passed from anonymous ancient to ancient orally to Dongba shamen, depicted, pictographically transcribed from shamen to shamen, transliterated and interpreted from Naxi to Chinese in Professor Fang Guo Yu's Book of Naxi Pictography, interpreted in Chinese and drawn in Dongba by Gao Feng, translated to English and interpreted again in verse.
