This 1st exhibit was organized under the Museum directorship of Catherine LaCroix and the Board Presidency Bill Jue. Jue saw "each piece as both shi yitu (painting representing the idea of a poem) and tishihua (painting inscribed with a poem". LaCroix saw that Gao's work would interest not only collectors of different forms of Asian calligraphy like Jue, but also pre adolescent collectors of mangas and animes.

As an American, my first reaction to Gao's work had also been that it resembled a giant's cartoon strip awaiting annimation.
